Vanilla - 2007/01/01 16:08 Well, I was intrigued by Vanilla when I first came accross it a few months ago, but I finally decided to install it in a test folder just to see what it is like.

So here it is. You can sign up if you want to test it out. I don't know if you have to email verify or what I didn't set anything in admin. I've installed a few plugins but I think the private messaging one has caused a few problems so I'm going to try a different one.

I'm not sure what I think so far. It is fully valid CSS supposedly (although I havn't checked with plug-ins etc) but this has to be good for SEO. Also it means that you can completely template just by changing the style sheet if you want. I will have to have a go at doing this sometime but I don't have time at the moment.

In terms of monetization... you can see i have "top", "footer", "header" or something labelled on the pages, that's just a plugin to insert your own content so obviously you could put ads there. I like the way the first page lists all the discussions, I think it is more conducive to a strong community. I don't like the way all forum sites are either vB or attempts to look the same as it. Because it's standard set up is about as interesting as a lamp post. I guess that's why I used Joomla for this site, but then the forum is still pretty normal set-up to be honest. Maybe I can modify it at a later date if I'm feeling brave.

Anyway this post is getting very long so i'm gonna hit "submit"!

Re:Vanilla - 2007/01/01 22:24 Is it just a coincidence that most successful forums are running vBulletin? I think not.

When I see a vB forum, I don't hesitate to sign up as I know where everything is, all the functions etc. It's taking time to get used to this Joomla! lark.

Re:Vanilla - 2007/01/01 23:50 Haha, I'm not saying that vBulletin isn't the best forum script, it probably is, but at £90 a lot of people can't afford the investment and, unlike you, I don't like every website I go on to look the same.

I know you like vB but the interface, although almost everyone is familiar with it, does have limitations...well you could probably customise it no end...but then what are you paying for?

I think 9 rules is a perfect example of what is possible without vB. much nicer than any vB site I have ever seen IN MY OPINION!

I mean think about a real "community" or group of people. you are not limited to listening to people by category. You have friends who you might listen to more than others. Imagine a forum script where the forum automatically gauged who you were most similar by rank in terms of what kind of topics you post in, and then showed similar new posts at the top of your homepage.

if only i had the php skillz

Having said all that, the issue for us is more whether a more natural or user customisable forum system would increase profit? probably not compared to the time input to create it, and the risk of it not taking off if you don't get it quite right. That's why if I had £90 spare I would probably have vB for this site...

I'm in the same boat as you, pixel. I don't like every website or every forum I go to to look the same; HOWEVER, it is important to me that they are easy to navigate. I've been on some crazy forums where you have to click multiple links each time just to check and see if anyone has posted under a certain topic. I like vB, but am very interested in other forum layouts and would love to see a forum like you just described! Maybe one day, eh?

PS - This forum may not be vB, but it's still easy to navigate and looks nice and professional. Anyway, variety is the spice of life.

Re:Vanilla - 2007/01/04 17:39 I'm starting a new forum (powered by vB of course), but I'm not using the default skin. It's heavily modified with a custom design - so not the same as all other forums, bit still easy to navigate.

I'll let you know when it's up!

Re:Vanilla - 2007/01/05 02:24 That's cool, but the majority of people who pay £90 for vB waste their money by leaving it set up pretty much as SMF would be!

I've seen some of what your site looks like and I think it will be good. Get some extra features in there and it should be pro
